PUBLICATIONS

Books

·     Between Freedom and Bondage: Race. Party and Voting Rights in the Antebellum North. (Routledge Press, September 2007). The book examines the issue of voting rights for blacks across northern states before the Civil War. As property qualifications were dropped for white males on a rather uniform basis across the country in the antebellum period, voting rights for blacks in the North were granted on an uneven basis. In each of these states the outcome varied. The book seeks to explain these different outcomes by combining economic, institutional, and ideological arguments about race and political change. It concludes by applying the theoretical framework developed to racial conflict in other periods of U.S. history.
