Title: WRITERS INTRODUCE WRITERS

Writing is a covenant between the writer and the word. Thus
the writer by the very nature of the work exists in isolation.
Here form and vision complement each other and result in literature.
The craftsman, being alone, often reaches out to others in
the same situation in order to form a community of writers.
The writer turns to this community for both emotional and
professional support. Writers Introduce Writers provides the
opportunity for known authors to give that support to writers
whose work they admire.
The idea of the writers helping other writers can be viewed
in a historical context, and authors have often lent their
support to promising individuals. From Paul Verlaine taking
Arthur Rimbaud individuals. From Paul Verlaine taking Arthur
Rimbaud under his wing to Gertrude Stein's support of the
young Ernest Hemingway, established authors have influenced
others, creating a contnuum of literature. Likewise, the well-known
relationship of Samuel Beckett and James Joyce provided authors.
This symbiosis continues up to the present day. For example,
through the efforts of Philip Roth, Alan Lelchuk has made
a name for himself. Even more recently, Susan Sontag has been
instrumental in the publication of ductions for this anthology,
the established authors are in support of the new work they
believe in.
