Koi have hearty appetites. Its been said that a hungry koi is a healthy koi. This means that a koi's dietary habits is indicative of its health. Feed a koi three times a day what it will eat in five minutes. Click on the photos below for information about the pictured feeding products.
The importance of clean water for your koi cannot be overemphasized. When properly maintained, your pond's water should be clear and odor free. It is important to monitor your water quality parameters. Test kits are available from any respectable aquarium supplier. The most important parameters to test for include:
pH or the measure of the acidity/alkalinity of the water
Dissolved oxygen level. Especially important in the summer
Nitrogen profile
Ammonia
Nitrite
Nitrate
And most importantly, temperature
Once you have built a koi pond following the guidelines for location and construction and you have an adequate filtration system, healthcare is not all that much of an issue. If you maintain water quality within strict guidelines, the koi will generally look after their own health. KOi are prone to the occasiional injury which will heal well on its own as long as the water quality is well kept.
