Closely allied with Dyson College of
Arts and Sciences, computer science programs were offered by both Dyson and the
Lubin Schools of Business. When the programs were consolidated in a full-fledged
School of Computer Science and Information Systems in 1983, the School was
administered by Dean Joseph Houle of Dyson College until a Dean was selected for
the new school. In October 1983 Dr. Susan Merritt, Chairperson of the Department
of Computer Science at Pace's Westchester campuses and an internationally
recognized expert in the field, was chosen. Dean. Dr. Merritt immediately set
out to build a faculty and earn accreditation in the shortest possible time for
the new schools undergraduate programs in Computer Science and Management
Information Systems and the master's programs in Computer Science and
Information Systems.

In 1986 Pace's undergraduate
Computer Science Program became one of only 22 programs in the United States
United States to be accredited by the Computer Science Accreditation Commission
of The Computing Sciences Accreditation Board. That same year, the New York
State Education Department granted approval for the degree of Master of Science
in Information Systems for New York and Westchester. In 1988 the State approved
a Master’s program in Telecommunications. Besides securing approval for
innovative new programs, the School of Computer Science and Information Systems
obtained a number of grants during its first few years of existence. For several
consecutive years the School received Graduate and Professional Opportunity
grants from the United States Department of Education. A National Science
Foundation grant in "Computer Graphics and Computer Vision" was also
obtained.
