Two starving mothers fight over whose child they will eat:

Thirteenth century.  The king, observing the pitiful scene, rends his garments in horror. This
shocking topos occurs with surprising frequency in biblical and medieval literature, and indicates,
at the least, concern about the fate of children during periods of social distress.
