Mr. Jones was the former Counsel and draft speechwriter for the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
He is Vice-Chairman of the Advisory Board of Institutional Investors Consulting Corporation (IICC) of Houston, TX. And has served as investment banking Consultant and Strategic Advisor to Dover Film Finance, Ltd.,The WestSphere Capital Group, an institutional investment management company, managing the investments of several financial institutions and companies in Latin America, The TeleHealth Network, Inner CityBroadcastingCorporation(owner of radio stations WLIB-AM and WBLS-FM in New York City), Dickerson Insurance Services, LA, California, The Heritage Television Network, the leading syndicator of African-American movies and television shows on broadcast television in the United States.
Twice selected by Fortune Magazine as a “Business Man of The Month”. Clarence B. Jones’ distinguished business career spans several decades. He was the first African-American to become a partner in a Wall Street investment banking firm, Carter, Berlind & Weill, Inc. (Included among his partners were Sanford I. Weill and Arthur Levitt, Jr.) and an Allied Member of the New York Stock Exchange.
Mr. Jones was the co-founder, Chairman, and CEO of the Intramerican Life Corporation, parent company of Intramerica Life Insurance Company of New York (subsequently acquired by the Colonial Penn Group of Life Insurance Companies); co-founder of the Boston, MA based $10 Million Urban National Corporation and Inner City Broadcasting Corporation.
During the late 60s and 70s he served as investment banking advisor to the Ministries of Finance of the Governments of Jamaica, Zambia and the Bahamas and counsel to the Boxing Commission of Zaire in connection with the closed circuit television satellite broadcast of the 1974 world championship heavy weight boxing match between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali. For several years he was a member of the Board of Trustees of The Africa America Institute., a foundation specializing in political, economic and health issues in Africa.
In April 1963, as counsel to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., together with Charles Morgan, Esq., he successfully negotiated with the City of Birmingham, Alabama a settlement of the civil rights demonstrations for desegregated Department Stores and Public Accommodations.
Mr. Jones was a recipient of a White House Letter of Commendation from President William L. Clinton for his work in Birmingham, Alabama on behalf of Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement. He was one of the distinguished Honorees of the New York City based Community Works Organization about whom an original Musical Presentation,” The Long Walk To Freedom”, was written in honor of his work by the Impact Theatre Repertory Company.
In September 1971, then Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller of the State of New York requested Mr. Jones, along with Tom Wicker a columnist and editor of the New York Times, and then Congressman Herman Badillo to go to Attica, NY, to negotiate an end of the Attica State Prison inmate rebellion. His work at Attica is detailed and described by Tom Wicker in his book “A Time To Die”.
In 1985 Mr. Jones was appointed Executive Vice President and Producer of Apollo Entertainment Television, the television production company of the world famous Apollo Theatre. He co-produced the weekly syndicated television show “Its Showtime At The Apollo” and Co-Executive produced the three hour Emmy Award NBC network special “Motown Returns To The Apollo” and the first theatrical feature film on Rap and Hip-Hop music, “Fly By Night”, distributed by Columbia Tri-Star Studios.
Mr. Jones is the Board of Trustees of The Theatre Development Fund of The City of New York and the Impact Repertory Theatre and Dance Company. He also serves on the Board of Advisors of the College Bound Student Alliance, Boulder, CO. and is a member of the Board of Directors of Third World Press, Chicago Ill.
He is a graduate of Columbia College, Columbia University, New York, the Boston University School of Law (LLB and JD degree) and a Certificate Recipient from the New York Institute of Finance. Mr. Jones has been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Communications from Allegheny College, Allegheny, PA and is mentioned or referred to in several books and articles, including:
