How to Register to Vote

To Register you Must

be a U.S, citizen

be a resident of the city, town, or county you wish to vote in at least 30 days before an election

be 18 years old

not be in jail or on parole for a felony conviction

not currently judged incompetent by order of the court of competent judicial authority

give up the right to vote in any other country

may be required to provide a photocopy of identification

When you can Vote

If you turn 18 by December 31st of the year that you file your registration form and by the date of the general, primary or any other elections you would want to participate in

You must mail or deliver your registration form to your county board of election no later then 25 days before the election you wish to participate in.

Where Can you Register to Vote

You can fill out a registration form on any of the given websites or you can search for a different site

You can register in person at your county board of elections in any business day, except election day

You can get registration forms at most agency offices and post offices or at any county board of elections

Voter Requirements Pertaining to Certain States

New York

• Registration Deadline: 25 days before the election
• I.D. Number:
  • your driver license number is required in order to register
  • if you do not have a drivers license number then at least the last four digits of your social security number (ssn)
  • if you do not have either one put "none" and the state will assign you a number
• Party affiliation: You must chose party affiliation to participate in any primary caucus, or convention
• Proof of Identification:
  • is required for any first time voters who did not supply a drivers license number or the last four digits if their ssn
  • you must send a copy of a current and valid photo identification and a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows your name and address

New Jersey

• Registration Deadline: 29 days before the election
• I.D. Number:
  • the last 4 digits of your ssn or your drivers license number is required in order to register
  • if you don't have either number you must write "NONE" on the form and the state will assign you a number
• Party affiliation
  • The New Jersey Form does not require you to affiliate yourself with a party if you are a newly registered voter
  • You can chose your party at the primary elections or you may also file a political party declaration form
  • If you wish to change party affiliation the voter must file a declaration 50 days before the primary election

  • you must send a copy of a current and valid photo identification and a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows your name and address
