Florence L. Denmark, Ph.D. 1931 -
Psi Chi Distinguished Member

Florence is considered to be the pioneer in the psychology of women. With her leadership, psychology of women became a respected and well recognized field of study. Her research became the guideline of new programs popping up in colleges across the country. Denmark documented cases of discrimination and the disadvantaged status of women in psychology. Florence wrote many papers on the role of women in the history of psychology, so their many contributions would not be forgotten In 1975, she and Julia Sherman chaired the first conference on psychological research on women. Joan McConnell Cullinan, 8/12/54 - 9/11/01
Honorable Alumnus

Joan was a victim of the terrorist attack at the World Trade Center on September 11. A Psychology major and a member of Psi Chi, she had completed her final course work for her B.A. degree from Pace University in July 2001. At the time of her death, she was at work as assistant to the President of Cantor Fitzgerald. She and her husband had begun the process to adopt a baby from China. Joan's plans also included pursuing graduate study in social work in preparation for a career as a therapist. At Pace, she earned the great affection of her Experimental Psychology classmates during the year-long quest to complete original research projects. Joan was a wonderful friend, colleague, and mentor. We will remember her for her love of life, caring, and enthusiasm. Upon learning that "The Joan Cullinan Memorial Scholarship Fund" had been established in her honor, the Pace Psi Chi Chapter began fundraising with a food sale on October 3, 2001. It was very successful, as was a couterpart event held by our Psi Chi colleagues on the Pleasantville campus. A special tribute is planned during Psi Chi's annual Induction Ceremony on May 31, 2002. Joan was later granted her Pace University degree posthumously.

Jackson, Janice, Ph.D. (2001). In Memorium: Joan McConnell Cullinan. Psych Eye, 14,3.
