Southwest Airlines Co. is a domestic
airline in the United States that provides predominantly
short-haul, high-frequency, point-to-point, low-fare service. As
of the end 2002, Southwest operated 375 Boeing 737 aircraft and
provided service to 59 airports in 58 cities in 30 states
throughout the United States. The Company focuses principally on
point-to-point, rather than hub-and-spoke, service in markets with
frequent, conveniently timed flights and low fares. Southwest's
average aircraft trip stage length in 2002 was 548 miles, with an
average duration of approximately 1.5 hours. By end of 2002, the
Company served 338 non-stop city pairs.
