About me

I was born and raised in a small city in northern China (Shandong), before later moving to Beijing. In my junior year of college, I decided to study abroad in the United States and ultimately chose Syracuse—partly because I was a big fan of Carmelo Anthony, who led Syracuse to an NCAA Championship. My two years at Syracuse left me with many unforgettable memories, but most importantly, I had the privilege of working with Professor Ping Zhang, who introduced me to Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) and inspired me to pursue a Ph.D.

I went on to complete my Ph.D. at Drexel University as one of the first two doctoral students of Professor Aleksandra Sarcevic. Her hands-on, patient, and deeply inspiring mentorship prepared me well for an academic career. Together, we took pride in being among the small number of HCI researchers in the United States who conduct work in highly challenging, often traumatic, and traditionally hard-to-access medical settings, including emergency care, trauma resuscitation, and emergency medical services.

Outside of work, I spend a good amount of time exercising and following sports. I enjoy watching all kinds of sports—soccer, basketball, football, badminton, and table tennis. I’m especially passionate about soccer and basketball. My favorite soccer team is Bayern München, which I’ve supported for almost 30 years. I don’t have a single “root” basketball team, but Syracuse and the 76ers are always among my top picks (I still miss the times when you could watch a 76ers game for just ten dollars!).

Two truths and two lies — can you guess which is which?

  • I have a Boston Terrier who thinks he is the boss.
  • I’ve visited more than 20 countries around the world.
  • I enjoy cooking and experimenting in the kitchen.
  • I’m actually a pretty good swimmer.
